“What—no. Are you okay? What kind of people do you hang out with?”

I shrugged, and the movement made the plane…swirly. “I watched a lot of My Strange Addiction growing up.”

Olive’s lips tucked in like she was holding in a laugh, and I smiled down at her. “But really, what could be so bad for you to be this nervous to see them?”

Her cheeks flushed and her pupils dilated like she sobered up for a second. “It’s just been so long at this point it's weird. Everyone there has another half and it’s like each time I talk to them, they have this pity for me. For being alone. It’s not a great time for me, so I’m not thrilled at the idea for the next two weeks.”

I nodded my head and put my eyes back on the movie, although I couldn’t quite pay enough attention to comprehend the scenes. Olive’s answer didn’t sit right with me, and I felt the need to push her buttons just a little more.

“andimighthavemadeupafakeboyfriend…”

Apparently, I had more to drink than I thought. I must have misheard her. “You what?”

“I may have told them that my boyfriend is coming…” I quickly decided I didn’t like the word boyfriend leaving her lips. “But I don’t have a boyfriend,” she muttered, and this time I couldn’t hold in my cackle. I was pretty sure I snorted somewhere in my laughter. I also knew our entire plane hated us.

“Why would you make up a fake boyfriend?” Surely it would’ve been easy for her to get a guy to come with her.

“My mom has convinced herself I’m a hermit crab and that I will die an old cat lady. And something in me just clicked and I let it slip out. I didn’t mean to, but I just bought a new Kate Spade wallet at thirty percent off, and I was on a high from it.”

She was absolutely crazy, and as much as she tried to seem put together when I first sat down on this flight…home girl was a hot mess. “So, you couldn’t get a guy friend or someone to help you?”

She looked down and something told me that the answer to that question was better left alone.

“You must have a pretty relaxed job if you can leave for Colorado for two whole weeks.”
