One of my nephews is called Luka, and you may have noticed that Claire’s son is also called Luka. That’s because, several Walsh books ago, when Luka Keyes was only a babbie, I thought it would be cute. But I hadn’t bargained on so much time passing and it’s important that the two characters aren’t confused. Luka Keyes is nothing like Claire’s Luka: Luka Keyes is not earnest and no-craic, on the contrary he is charm itself and a right laugh. I just needed to say that…

Charlotte Mendlesson’s beautiful book Rhapsody in Green arrived in the post at a time when I was struggling to find Rachel’s ‘missing piece’—and it turned out to be gardening! (No one was more surprised than me, but this is one example of the several serendipitous things that helped me to keep writing.)

You probably noticed I set this book in 2018. I’d already started writing Again, Rachel before the pandemic, and I didn’t want to incorporate it into the story.

Finally, you, my beloved readers, I’m so grateful for how you’ve loved Rachel since she first appeared in print. Your fondness for her, for the Walshes (and Luke ;)) has filled me with delight. I honestly feel that you and I are friends, even though we might not have actually met (yet, like). I sincerely hope I didn’t let you down.

Every day in North America, a number of families are faced with the devastation of the death of their baby. If you have been affected by Rachel, Luke and Yara’s story, and would like to talk to someone, there are several organizations in Canada and the United States available for resources and support.
