Yes. Of course, he lied. Im just double-checking something I saw in the roster. Does Georgetown have two doctors named George Clark?
Ashley snorted. We do. Its terribly confusing for everyone. Ones in Internal Medicine and the other is in Pediatrics. Why?
Just trying to sort out something. Ill call you back later and explain. He hung up, feeling sick to his stomach. Had he gotten it right and still not been able to save someone? He ran over to Danielle. There are two Dr. Clarks at Georgetown. Weve got the right one, but what if Pickett doesnt?
***
This time, Danielle didnt bother parking down the block. She pulled right into Dr. Clarks driveway, right behind his open garage door. A messenger bag lay on the grass of the front lawn.
Danielle ran to the front door with Morgan right on her heels. It was ajar.
No! Im telling you! Youve got the wrong doctor! A voice cried from within.
Danielle banged the door open, entering with her weapon drawn. FBI! Freeze!
Tyler Pickett had the other Dr. George Clark pinned to the floor. There was a knife in his right hand that he held high over his head. Pickett looked over his shoulder at Danielle and shifted to put Clark between him and the agent, using him as a human shield. Stay back! Tyler yelled.
There was no way for Danielle to shoot Pickett without potentially hitting Clark. Let him go, Pickett. You cant win this, Danielle said, taking a small step forward. Let him go.
Morgan crept in, careful to stay out of the line of fire. Hed dealt with plenty of distraught people during his years in medicine. He called on all that experience now. Listen to me, Tyler. Youre making a mistake here. We know why youre doing this and this is not the Dr. George Clark that made that mistake.
So he keeps saying. Tyler stood, hauling Clark with him. The doctor cried out in pain.
Morgan looked over at Danielle who gave him a small head nod. He stepped a little further into the room. Hes telling the truth, Tyler. It wasnt him. There are two doctors named George Clark at Georgetown. This isnt the right one. This guys a pediatrician. He treats kids. Theres no way he had anything to do with your mom. Let him go, Tyler. He had nothing to do with your mothers death. Morgan kept his voice low and even.
Youre lying. Pickett shook his head back and forth like a horse trying to shoo off flies.
Im not. I swear. Morgan crept a little closer, still very aware of Danielles sight lines. Agent Hernandez and I just came from the house of the doctor who gave your mother the false diagnosis. He freely admits it, says it was the worst mistake hes ever made.
The knife lowered a little. Tylers hand shook. Sweat poured down his face.
