Asked around. She didnt need to know about the extensive file search. I remembered Lexa talking about the case. It would have been when Michelle was still working at Georgetown.
Danielle made a noise that didnt sound like she believed him, but she didnt question him further. Give me the mans name and Ill check into him. Ill pick you up at nine.
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
At 8:57 the next morning, Morgans door buzzed. He hit the intercom switch. Yes?
Im downstairs, Danielle said and then cut the connection.
Well, at least she hadnt snuck in to show up at his apartment door this time. He came downstairs to find her double-parked in front of the building. She unlocked the door to the sedan and he climbed in.
Cole Hutton works at a Giant Food over on 7th Street Northwest. She signaled, glanced over her shoulder, and then pulled smoothly into traffic. Well head there first.
Morgan nodded and sat back. He wasnt crazy about being driven some place. He preferred to be the driver, to be in control. At least Danielle didnt have him stomping on an imaginary brake. It used to drive Ashley crazy when he did that and she finally just let him drive.
The rain started falling again. Danielle turned on the wipers. So who did you speak to when you were asking around?
Well, the most important person is a nurse who works in the Emergency Department. She was there the night Hutton was brought in.
The wipers swished a few times. And she remembers Hutton threatening Lexa in particular?
Yes. I guess he started out with the usual. He was going to sue the hospital, but he moved on pretty quickly to focus on Lexa.
Danielle pulled into the grocery store parking lot and selected a parking place in the back row of the lot near the driveway. She strode across the parking lot. Morgan kept pace beside her. Are we getting our steps in or is there a reason to park as far from the entrance as possible?
Its a good spot if we have to leave quickly.
Do you anticipate that? Morgans steps slowed. Once again, that sensation of having gotten himself into an unfamiliar place came over him. The man they were going to talk to could be responsible for two cold-blooded murders. Hed let himself get so caught up in the puzzle of figuring out who might have a grudge against both Lexa and Michelle that hed lost sight of the kind of person they were trying to find.
Hutton wouldnt be the first person to run when the FBI shows up asking questions. Its kind of a thing. Danielle glanced over her shoulder at him and he hurried to catch up.
