- CHAPTER THIRTY ONE
As Tyler turned, Clark twisted beneath him so they were facing each other. Who are you? What do you want? His chest heaved as he panted with the exertion.
Take a good look, doc. Can you guess who I am?
Clark searched his face. No. No. Ive never seen you before. Who are you?
Typical. This man had wreaked devastation on Tylers world and didnt even recognize him. The arrogance of these doctors! My name is Tyler Pickett. My mother was Mary Pickett. Ring any bells?
Clark stopped struggling beneath him. No. It doesnt ring any bells. Should it?
Let me refresh your memory, doc. Tyler shifted so he had the doctor pinned beneath his knees. You told my mother she had three months left to live. You told her that her final days would be full of pain and misery and that there was absolutely no hope for anything else.
Clark recoiled. No! No! Youve got the wrong guy. I swear! Its not the kind of diagnosis I give! Im a pediatrician, for Gods sake! I dont treat adults. Only kids! Even if I did, I would never have presented anything to a patient in that way! He struggled against Tyler.
Well, you did. And whats even funnier about it, doc. Bear with me, this is a good one. You were wrong. Some clerk in the billing office inverted some numbers and you never even bothered to check the actual test results. If you had, you would have found out that my mother had years in front of her. Happy, healthy years.
Clark shook his head violently. Im telling you that you have the wrong doctor! I treat children. You have the wrong guy. Im begging you! Please! Listen to me. I am not the person youre looking for.
Is that how you sleep at night? By telling yourself that? Just erasing it from your memory? Tyler held the knife to the edge of Clarks jaw. Because I cant sleep at night. You know why? Because once my mother heard what the next miserable months of her life were going to be like, she killed herself. She didnt want to put herself or me or the rest of our family through such a hopeless and horrible end.
What? Clarks eyes flew open wide. Thats terrible! I would definitely remember that. If that happened, it wasnt me who did it! Its not me!
Oh, it was you, all right. And Im here to make sure that you never do that to another family, that you never wreak that kind of destruction and grief anywhere ever again.
Tyler lifted his knife high. How about I remind you of exactly who my mother was?
No! Clark shouted.
