We think so, Danielle said. But theres been nothing youve noticed? No one following you? Nothing like that?
The doorbell rang. Clark stood up, but Danielle rose and stopped him. Are you expecting anyone?
He shook his head. No. Not really.
The doorbell rang again. A shot of adrenaline flowed through Morgan. Was this it? Was it Pickett? Hed lured his other victims by pretending to need help. Maybe he was doing the same thing here, ringing the doorbell and maybe asking if he could use the phone? Or saying his car had broken down?
Danielle said, Okay. Im going to come with you to the door, but dont do anything until I give you the okay.
Clark stared at her for a second. You really think Im in danger?
I know you are. Danielle drew her weapon, but kept it down by her side. Morgan, step over there so youre out of the line of sight from the doorway.
He started to argue, but the look on Danielles face made it clear that she wasnt going to back down. Morgan stepped aside, poised to help, but determined to show Danielle that he could control himself. He would not be thrown off this investigation again. He could and would help solve this case.
Danielle whispered to Clark who called out. Who is it?
Its Henry from down the street, George.
Danielle looked over at Clark who nodded. She stepped back, but kept her weapon drawn. Go ahead and open it, she said quietly.
Clark stepped forward and opened the door.
A man said, Hey, George. Got a few letters for you. Post office cant seem to handle more than one person on a block named Clark. The man handed a few envelopes to Clark.
Thanks. Such a bother.
Yeah. Second time this week. Youd think theyd figure it out.
Thanks. Clark shut the door. Neighbor down the street, he said to Danielle. We have the same last name and the post office is constantly delivering our mail to each other. Curse of a common last name, I guess.
A common last name. A pretty common first name, too. Maybe there was a different kind of mishap happening here. Clark had said he hadnt been in court when the son was there. Maybe he didnt know what he looked like. Maybe he didnt know to check what department the doctor worked in. Maybe he found one Dr. George Clark and didnt bother to look any further. Morgan pulled out his phone and hit the button to call Ashley.
Is everything okay, Morgan? That honeyed voice held a note of concern for him that made his heart leap a little and then clench. Once she found out that hed broken yet another promise to her, shed be through with him. There was no time for that now, though. If Morgan was right, another doctor was in danger.
