- CHAPTER THIRTY ONE
A bang rang out and Tyler screamed and then twisted away from Morgan grabbing his leg. Danielle had her cell phone out before Morgan could even register what was happening. This is FBI Special Agent Danielle Hernandez. Badge Number 5551234. I need emergency services and police back-up at 2734 Tulip Road.
Morgans chest heaved with the effort hed made. Panting, he looked over at where Tyler grabbed at his leg. Danielle had clearly been shooting to wound rather than to kill. There was too much blood, though. Way too much. It was pumping out onto the floor with every breath Tyler Plunkett took.
How far out is the ambulance? Morgan called to her.
Theyre saying four minutes, Danielle replied as she checked over Dr. Clark for injuries.
Pickett might have four minutes, but Morgan doubted it. At the rate he was bleeding, hed be past saving by the time the EMTs arrived to treat him. To survive, someone needed to apply a tourniquet to the leg, shut down the bleeding.
Morgan knew exactly what to do and how to do it, but how far was Morgan willing to go to save the man who had blown a whole in his heart by murdering Lexa? What about Michelles family? Briannas? The three women had been doing their jobs. Theyd done nothing wrong, but they were all dead because of this man. Morgan could stop the bleeding, keep the man alive until the ambulance arrived.
But should he?
Lexa would have made such a fine doctor. Not only would she not have a chance to fulfill that dream, but how many patients would suffer because they wouldnt get the kind of care that she would have provided? This man had been trying to take out people who had made a mistake and had probably condemned countless others to seeing doctors that werent nearly as good or as compassionate as Lexa Windham.
There it was. Lexas compassion. Her empathy. It was one of the things that had made her such an exceptional doctor. What would she have thought of Morgan if there was one life that could have been saved and he did nothing to do it?
He took off his shirt, ripped off the sleeve and began wrapping it tightly around Tyler Picketts leg. The flow of blood from his gunshot wound slowed. Morgan used the other part of his shirt to staunch what was left, gratified to see it take a little longer for the blood to soak through.
Danielle crouched down next to him. Is he going to be okay?
Morgan nodded. For what its worth, yeah.
The sound of sirens split the night. Help was almost there.
CHAPTER THIRTY ONE
Come on, doc, Danielle said. Ill give you a ride home. I think weve done all we can here.
