In the hospital, Morgan generally knew where to look. He could see the signs of what was off, what wasnt quite right. Out here with Danielle, everything was new. He felt off kilter, unmoored.

More than that, though, he felt rage. Who was this man who felt he had the right to cut short these lives? People often accused doctors of playing God. They had a point. Doctors made life and death decisions every day, but not like this. This was pure evil.

And Morgan was going to seek out the root of it and destroy it before it could destroy anyone else. Theyd been too late to save Brianna Olson. He wasnt going to let that happen again.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

An hour later, Morgan was back in Danielles FBI vehicle, and they were headed back into the city without much of a feeling of accomplishment. Beyond the tire tracks, he hadnt contributed much. Or, at least, it felt that way.

I dont see how Brianna is connected to Lexa or to Michelle, he said. He adjusted the shoulder harness of the seat belt. Except for the obvious and that doesnt seem like enough.

What would be enough to take someones life? What kind of person plotted and planned to end someone elses existence? Morgan didnt understand it.

He spent nearly every waking minute of every day trying to save as many lives as he could. He started and ended each day looking for ways to relieve suffering and extend lives. Most days, he managed to do that for at least one person. For years, that was what had driven him forward, through medical school and his sisters disappearance and his parents deaths. Hed found purpose in helping others.

When had that stopped being enough? When had those triumphs ceased to spring him out of bed every day? When had he become so weary?

He spread his hands out in front of himself and looked at them. He hadnt done any of those things today. He hadnt prescribed a medication, requested a test, or performed a procedure that would help anyone. He had, however, felt every bit as driven as he ever had in the hospital. He would stop this murderer from taking another life.

The connections there. Well find it. Danielle pulled off 695 on the exit that would take them to Morgans apartment.

He envied her confidence. Whoa, he said. Where are we going?

Im taking you home and then Im going to go get some sleep myself. She steered the car through the darkened streets.

But we need to start looking at Briannas case. We need to see if somehow shell make the connection between all three of them clearer. Lets keep going. He doubted hed be able to sleep anyway. He was too keyed up.
