Morgan swallowed hard. That doctor made a mistake. He didnt double-check all the paperwork and he told your mother that she was going to die. Dont you see the irony here, though, Tyler? You didnt check carefully and youre about to take revenge on someone who had nothing to do with your mothers case. Nothing.
Tyler wavered, looking back and forth between Clark and Morgan. No. I dont believe you.
Its true. Youve already done that, in fact. Youve already taken the life of someone else who had nothing to do with your mothers case. Lexa Windham. She didnt treat your mother. Morgans voice cracked.
Tylers head shot up. Her name was in the file! I saw it!
She signed off on some blood work while one of her fellow residents was out. Your mother wasnt her patient. She never treated your mother. She never met your mother. She made no mistakes. But you did. Now shes dead. How do you think her family feels, Tyler? Morgan asked, trying to make his tone conversational when the words he spoke made him want to punch this man in the face. How is what youre doing here any different than what that other doctor did? Youre making mistake after mistake and people are dying because of it.
Shut up shut up shut up! Tyler shoved Dr. Clark away and lunged instead at Morgan. Morgan grabbed the arm that controlled the knife and wrenched it to the side. Both men fell to the floor in a twisting, writhing heap.
Morgans knee and elbow hit the ground hard. Pain radiated through him. The knife slashed toward him again. He managed to twist away from it just in time, but how many more times would he be able to do that? Take the shot, Danielle!
I cant, she yelled. Not without hitting you.
For a moment, everything seemed to slow down to Morgan. It was as if he could see Tyler moving in slow motion while his own mind raced. He knew anatomy. He knew where peoples weaknesses were. The knife rose. He wasnt going to be able to avoid it again. If he could incapacitate Tyler, even for just a moment, he could get out of his grasp and out of Danielles line of fire. The quickest way to do that would be to interrupt the blood flow to his brain by constricting the carotid artery. Morgan turned his hand and with the side of it, hit Tyler as hard as he could in the neck, just below his jaw.
Tyler slumped for only a second, but it was long enough for Morgan to scramble out of Danielles way and put Tyler directly in her sights. Take the shot, Danielle! Take the shot!
