Maybe. Maybe not. I can keep that pace up for a minimum of six or seven miles and he was already gasping for air. Danielle shrugged. Regardless, hes not a guy with a lot of options. Wed have found him again. Look, I get what you were trying to do and its my own fault. I asked you to help and I havent really defined the parameters of what you should and shouldnt do. Can we put tackling suspects on the list of shouldnt do, please? She straightened.
Morgan nodded his assent. He wasnt sure he meant it though. She had a point. If Hutton had been the killer and had been armed with a knife, he could have gutted Morgan before Danielle got there.
On the other hand, now they knew for sure and wouldnt have to chase him further. Plus, Morgan hadnt felt this way for years. Energized. Enervated. Alive. Purpose-driven. He was going to help them find Lexas killer and put the bastard away forever.
After that? He wasnt sure. He had this to hang onto for now, though. This would keep him going. What now?
Back to the drawing board, Danielle said.
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Brianna Olson hurried to her car. It took her a second to find it. It was one gray car in a sea of them and sometimes she had to check the license plate before she was sure it was hers.
Sure enough, as she pulled out of the parking lot of Georgetown University Hospital, there was another gray sedan right behind her. She flipped on the radio and tapped her fingers to the beat of the song. She liked this one. It made her think about getting dressed up to go out. Fun. Maybe this weekend. Shed call some girlfriends and theyd go dancing. Assuming she wasnt too tired. Nursing was hard!
The light ahead of her changed and she rolled to a stop. Was that the same car following her that had pulled out of the Georgetown lot behind her? She didnt remember anybody on her shift that would take the exact same route home as her. It was a big hospital, though.
The light turned green and she started up again. The gray car staying right on her tail. She started to feel uneasy. Everyone at the hospital was talking about what had happened to Dr. Windham and then there was that lab tech that had gotten killed, too. Was she being paranoid?
At the next intersection, Brianna turned right without signaling. Damn it. The other car did, too. It didnt mean anything, though. She made two left turns, one right after the other, heading back to the street shed been on.
The gray car was still there.
