The officers dragged him backward away from Lexa. Panic seized him. No! he screamed. I need to stay here. I need to be with her.

Morgan struggled against the arms holding him only to have them tighten. Damn it. He had to get back to Lexa. He had to get away from them. In desperation, he threw an elbow back and heard the officer grunt as Morgan connected with the mans solar plexus. He tried to slip free from the other officers grasp only to have that grip tighten further.

Then suddenly Morgan was face down on the scarred cement of the alley floor. Thats it, buddy. Youre coming downtown.

CHAPTER SIX

Morgan laid his head down on his pillowed arms, the metal table cold against his cheek. He had no idea how long hed been in this gray, claustrophobic room at the police station. It could have been five minutes or five hours. At least he wasnt handcuffed anymore.

The cops had brought him here to this room and, after getting him a sweatshirt, the questions had started. Who was he? Who was Lexa to him? Why had he been in the alley? When had Lexa called him? What had she said? Hed answered everything multiple times. Then two more cops, these ones in suits rather than uniforms, circled around and asked the same things again in different ways, trying to catch him in a lie or an inconsistency. Morgan knew the technique. He used it on patients sometimes when he could tell they werent giving him the whole truth. Come at the same thing from multiple angles and eventually you got a fuller picture.

The problem was that there was no fuller picture to get from Morgan. Hed told them everything he could think of. He wasnt holding anything back. He was willing to do anything he could do to help them catch the bastard who had done that to Lexa.

Lexa. Please, God, let Lexa be okay. It was a longshot. He knew all too well what all that blood had meant. Her face had been so pale, her gaze fixed. Maybe, though, maybe a miracle would happen and theyd be able to stitch her up and pump some blood into her. Maybe they could save her.

Damn it. He wanted to be at the hospital helping. He wanted to do something besides sit in this God forsaken interview room waiting for . . . what?
