Meanwhile, Danielle was on her phone as well. Hey, Gunther. Its Danielle. I need an address for a Dr. George Clark. He works at Georgetown University. Hes in the Internal Medicine department.
She listened for a moment. Yeah. Im concerned he might be our unsubs next victim.
Then the hospital operator was back on. Im sorry, Dr. Stark. Dr. Clark isnt answering. Is he on call? Can I get someone else from his department for you?
No. Thanks. He hung up and turned to Danielle. No answer.
Ive got an address. Lets go.
CHAPTER TWENTY NINE
Tyler Pickett sat in the back of his darkened van, watching people come and go. It was a quiet street. Suburban. Well-to-do. There wasnt much traffic. He was waiting for one person in particular. The person most responsible for the death of his mother.
His mother. The person who had believed in him, who had supported him, who had done everything for him. The kindest person he knew.
Dead. Because this asshole didnt know how to read a test result and let his decisions for his medical patients be decided by billing codes. Greedy.
As if the thoughts had summoned him, Dr. George Clark pulled his car into the driveway. Pickett jumped out of his car and trotted the few feet to the edge of the doctors property. There he slowed his steps to a stroll. From the corner of his eye, he tracked the doctors progress as the man parked his car in the detached garage.
As the doctor emerged from the garage, Tyler stopped on the sidewalk grabbed at his chest, took a few staggering steps, and collapsed.
Hey! Are you okay?
Tyler twitched a little, but didnt respond. He kept his face impassive as he listened for the doctors approaching footsteps.
A hand shook his shoulder. Hey! Buddy! Whats going on? Can you talk?
As he had with Michelle and Lexa and Brianna, Tyler grabbed the doctors wrist with one hand while drawing his knife out with the other and slashing out with it.
It didnt go as smoothly this time.
He hadnt factored in how much bigger and stronger Clark was than the three women hed already killed. The doctor wrenched away, springing to his feet. What the hell? He grabbed his arm where a line of red was already soaking through his white shirt and sprinted for his front door.
Tyler got to his feet nearly as quickly as Clark, but the doctor had a head start on him. Clark made it to the front door and punched in a code on a keypad next to the door. The door popped open and Clark was almost through it when Tyler caught up to him. Launching himself forward, he knocked Clark the rest of the way into the house, landing on top of him.
This was better than what hed planned. He could take his time now without worry that a passerby would see them.
