And even though I have officially retired from show business, show business has not retired me. There was a television movie transparently based on my story several years ago, titled The Rise and Fall of Markie Silver. Seriously. The actress playing “Markie” was a former swimsuit model with huge boobs and a foot taller than me and that wasn’t the worst part. Peter Hamlet played the role based on himself. Only fifty pounds heavier. Unbelievable.
I continue to pop up here and there on Entertainment Tonight or Inside Hollywood. Especially now around my birthday. I am thankful that during the peak of my career, there weren’t these cellphone cameras and all this internet stuff. I pity the young actors and actresses today whose every misstep is recorded. I thought it was bad enough with the Enquirer, but now there’s TMZ and this Perez Hilton guy who has revamped the whole game. I’ve got a whole rant about him in my blog.
Even though I’m retired, part of me will always be drawn to show business. I confess to reading People magazine and one can never underestimate how tempting an offer can be to a recovering movie star. Like pouring a drink under the nose of an alcoholic.
Just this morning I got a surprise IM from Penny.
PENPAL: Happy Birthday.
JAKS: Thanks. How did you know?
PENPAL: Entertainment Tonight, CNN, the papers.
JAKS: Oh them. How’s the hood?
PENPAL: Dangerous. I’m at CAA now. How’s paradise?
JAKS: Great. But my hula skirt gives me a rash.
PENPAL: Seriously?
JAKS: No.
PENPAL: I have an offer for you to do a television show.
JAKS: Are you kidding?
PENPAL: A reality show. They want to film you at home.
JAKS: Yeah…
PENPAL: Jackie?
JAKS: Film here? On Kauai?
PENPAL: Yes.
PENPAL: It’s a lot of money.
PENPAL: Eight episodes guaranteed two hundred thousand per.
PENPAL: Jackie?
PENPAL: Are you there?
JAKS: Yes.
PENPAL: I’ve got lunch at the Ivy.
JAKS: Okay. I’ll get back to you.
I took a swig of my Kona coffee and leaned back in the ergonomically correct chair Daddy had sent for my birthday.
A reality show. I’ve watched a few of them, Survivor of course, and that one with the cute couple and eight babies. Oh, and the Osbournes. It would be fun to be part of a production again. I wouldn’t have to learn lines. And a few million dollars would buy a lot of taro chips.
