The DJ invited people to the dance floor. I looked at Cal, silently asking if it was ok to dance with Jane and he nodded his head. Technically, he was her boyfriend to her family, but I wanted to dance with her. I grabbed Jane’s hand and I led her to the dance floor, as the next song changed to a slow song. Jane also sang along with the song about golden hours, setting the world on fire, and knowing that everything was going to be alright. She smiled shyly again, and I knew I would do whatever it took to make sure she didn’t lose her smile. What was it about a wedding that made everyone feel so optimistic about love?
We spent the rest of the night drinking, dancing and having a good time. JD and Katherine made their way to our table at one point, and I’ve never had such a great time with someone else’s family. We sent Katherine and JD off with sparklers and they left for the evening. Tomorrow, they would be on a flight to the Bahamas. After they left, we all helped pick up except, of course, Jane’s mom and Paul. As I took out the trash, I overheard Paul talking to his husband.
“With the way they were all eye fucking her, you would think that they were all actually fucking her,” he sneered. “I’m not surprised she’s like this.”
“Like what, Paul?” Julian snapped at him. “Even if she was fucking all three of them, you, of all people, should be accepting. Being who you want without judgment is what we live for and you’re going to judge her?”
Damn, Julian was amazing. Why did he end up marrying a douche like Paul?
“What is it with you and Jane?” He asked Paul.
“Nothing. I can see that you’re just going to take her side.” He barked.
“Whoa… I was just…”
I helped Julian out and made some noise ripping the bag I was carrying, so I could get Paul to chill out.
“Fuck,” I said, picking up some trash, listening for them.
“Looks like you stuffed it too much,” Julian chuckled, as he came to help me.
“Who wants to make multiple trips to the trash?” I smiled at him.
“Obviously you’re just lazy.” Paul sneered, and left us to pick up the trash.
I raised my eyebrows at his judgment.
“Shit, I’m sorry. He’s…” He didn’t finish as he stared at Paul walking away.
“It’s cool man,” I shrugged, not knowing what else to say because saying your husband was a fucking asshole was not an option.
“No… It’s not,” he said, getting up and helping me with the trash. “I don’t know why he and Jane butt heads.”
“Me neither, but thanks for helping me,” I said, walking back to the house.
