“He won’t talk to me about it, and I don’t ask because it’s a tough subject for him.” Julian walked with me back to the house.
“With siblings it could be anything.” I tried to make him feel better.
“Yea, but I just can’t see Jane doing something awful to Paul. With her husband dying, I thought it might bring them closer, but I feel like it made it worse.”
I didn’t know what it was, I’m sure it was probably something really stupid, judging by how much of an ass he is.
“Don’t beat yourself up over it. I’m sure it will eventually resolve itself.” I patted his back, and he nodded his head.
“Didn’t mean to unload, but thank you for listening.” He looked embarrassed.
“Don’t worry about it. I know I’m not much help, but sometimes it’s better to say things out loud,” I said, opening the door to let him in the house.
“I can see why she might like you. You’re very charismatic and easy on the eyes.” He chuckled.
“Thanks, I think she deserves to be happy and if that includes me, who am I to deny her, despite what people might say?” I didn’t outright say we were with her, but I figured telling Julian wasn’t a bad thing.
He smiled. “I knew she was with Callum but the way you and Aiden were around her, you guys just seem more familiar than friends. I’m really happy for her.”
“Well, she didn’t want us to say anything. I think she feared getting judged and I agree, people aren’t always so kind about what they don’t know,” I said, hoping he would see Jane’s apprehension.
“I promise I won’t say anything,” he figuratively zipped his mouth shut.
I laughed at the juvenile gesture, but it made me like him more.
“Thanks Julian, maybe one day things between the two of them will be ok,” I said, to ease his mind because I felt like he needed it.
“I hope so because Paul is a great person and I feel like he might be a little misunderstood,” Julian said, checking his phone. “Looks like our ride is leaving, so I will see you guys later. It was nice meeting you.”
“You too, Julian.” I shook his hand and watched him leave, feeling a little uneasy about this whole feud Jane had with her brother. I wanted to ask her what had happened, but didn’t know if that was a touchy subject. Maybe she would tell us on her own. Walking into the kitchen, I saw Jane and her mother talking.
“You can’t be serious about staying here, Jane. It’s so underdeveloped and… how would you even survive? You are wasting your life here and that’s not saying much since you’re just a nurse.”
