“Is the baby ok?” Aiden asked, pushing me out of the way so both of them could get in.
Nathan dumped all of Kelsey’s stuff on a chair and they rushed to her and the baby. “She’s beautiful,” Nathan said with a big smile.
“She’s so tiny.” Aiden said, looking over at the little bundle.
“Hey guys,” Kelsey beamed. “Meet baby Rose.”
“Hello baby Rose,” Nathan said as he caressed her head over the beanie.
I clenched my jaw at the flash of sudden emotion again. I suggested the name Rose, and it did weird things to me to know she chose that name. My eyes stung as I turned away to get my shit together.
Someone knocked, and I turned around to see Jane poking her head in.
“Hey,” she said, and when she looked at me, her expression became soft.
“Hey,” we all parroted back.
“How are you doing, mama?” She walked over to Kelsey and leaned over to see baby Rose. We all leaned over to see her.
“Full of love,” Kelsey whispered.
“She’s beautiful,” Jane said, a little hoarse.
Looking up, I saw Jane with tears in her eyes and a look of longing on her face. The guys looked at Jane too and we all broke down a little with her. I didn’t even think about how this must feel for her, how maybe I opened a wound that wasn’t healed enough for her to work through. I just didn’t trust anyone else to take care of Kelsey and I knew she would treat her like she deserved, and she did.
“You want to hold her?” Kelsey offered, oblivious to the emotional storm Jane was going through.
Jane looked devastated for a moment. “I have to get back to work, but I just stopped by to make sure you got settled in.”
“Aiden, can you hold her?” Kelsey looked up at him confidently. “Wait, can you wash your hands first?”
I smiled at Kelsey, enjoying seeing her already so protective. Aiden washed his hands quickly and walked back to us.
“Ready.” He took baby Rose with ease. He had the most experience with kids and not by much. She looked even smaller in his embrace as he and Nate fawned over her. I think we were all pretty much fucked at this point, and this little girl was going to wrap us around her finger. I couldn’t think of better people to keep this little girl safe.
I looked over to see Jane and Kelsey embracing. “Thank you so much, and I’m so sorry.” Kelsey murmured. I went to wash my hands first and walked over to the guys to give the girls a moment.
“Can I hold her?” I asked, feeling nervous.
Aiden looked up at me, surprised. “Sure, make sure your arm looks like mine and I’ll place her there. You just gotta make sure her head isn’t flopping around.”
