“Not without a DNA test, and there is no way in hell I am giving her half of the money that was left to me. I paid into that insurance, I have suffered, and I have had to pay for a lot of his shit, not to mention their medical bills.” I wanted to say this all out loud to her, but I knew that was a stupid idea.

“No, we do not agree to the terms.” George replied. “We request a paternity test.”

I looked at Victoria, who was calm and unbothered, like she was confident because she was going to get exactly what she wanted. They dismissed us and would come back when the paternity test was ready in four to five weeks.

At this point, I was on autopilot. I nodded when they asked me something, and walked out with George and the other lawyer. I was getting ready to say goodbye so I could go home and deal with this in peace.

“You know it’s your own fault. If you hadn’t come in between us, then you could have saved yourself a lot of heartache. I’m only asking for what is owed to me.” Victoria’s voice cut through the fog.

“Excuse me?” I was shocked she said something and shocked that she said what SHE was owed, not her daughter.

“If he had the balls to leave you when he said he would, then he would still be alive. But you had to get pregnant, pretend about the miscarriage, and say that it was just a mistake. How pathetic can you be?” The hatred in her eyes was shocking.

“Henry must have painted a very different picture because we were happy, and the time we got pregnant he had me in every room of the house,” I snapped, feeling the anger that I’ve suppressed coming to the surface.

Her face fell for just a second before she gave me a smile that made me worry about what else she was going to spew out. “Tell Madie, that Evelyn misses her.” Her lawyer said something to her, getting her to leave before my brain could process what she had just said.

“Jane, let’s get going. We can discuss what we want to offer her in the event the test comes back pos…”

“Not to… to… today,” I stuttered. I couldn’t take it anymore. I didn’t realize it could get worse, but the one person in my life who had been there through everything, had lied to my face for years.

“Jane,” George called out when I started walking, not caring anymore. I walked faster and faster until I was outside. I didn’t know where to go, but I couldn’t take it anymore. I grabbed an Uber home, not even caring that my car was at George’s office.
