I rode the car and elevator in silence. Opening the door to the condo, I fell to the floor, crying. I didn’t know what I did to deserve this. I felt like life was punishing me, but I didn’t know for what. If I thought the death of Henry was awful, to hear his and Madie’s betrayal was by far worse.
The past five years had been a lie. What had made him go back to her? Why did he go back? I thought back to our memories, looking for a sign that he wasn’t happy with me, or he wanted out. If he had slept with her before our wedding, why go ahead with the wedding? Why drag me through lies when he could have had a family with Victoria? A cold sensation overtook my body when I thought about a few instances a few weeks before his death. I found another phone in his traveling bag and he chalked it up to it being an old phone.
Getting up quickly, I went into his office in search of that traveling bag. I hadn’t touched a thing in his office, so it had to be there. I opened the door smelling the stale air and quickly went to work looking for it. He had locked every drawer in his desk, and I knew exactly where to find the key. I went to the bowl of junk, and I remembered seeing a key that I did not recognize and left it there.
I came back after retrieving it and sure enough; it unlocked the drawers. I opened the first drawer and there it was, that phone. I quickly plugged it in and waited for it to start up. The screen came up and of course it was the same password as his other phone. A picture of Victoria, Henry, and Evelyn was his screensaver. Victoria and Evelyn were kissing his cheek on either side, and he was laughing. My breathing became shallow as I clicked on the messages, showing he had six new ones. All of them were from Victoria, and I clicked on the new messages.
Hey baby, have you told her?
Evelyn said she misses you.
Hey, I haven’t heard from you.
Henry, so help me god if you don’t follow through again we are over. You proposed to me and said we would be a family.
The money didn’t go through and if this is because of that stupid whore, then you are more of a coward than I expected.
