I knew I was staring, but a small part of my heart was hoping for this to be just a last-ditch effort at drama. The need to cry was overwhelming, and I muttered “Be right back,” before I almost ran to the bathroom. Standing in front of the sink, I tried to take deep breaths. I didn’t need a paternity test.
For the past six years, I had looked into those same eyes. I knew I had little time, but I gave myself a minute to let myself feel like shit. The last seven years of my life were a blatant lie. I had lived with a liar, and god knows what else was a sham. Fixing my blouse and skirt, I mentally prepared myself for this hearing and what I was about to hear. I ignored the need to cry and left the bathroom. I came back just as they were ushering everyone into the small room.
I sat by George and another lawyer, who was a junior partner or something like that. I took a glance at the other side, looking for the little girl, and I realized she wasn’t in the room. I locked eyes with Victoria, and I swear there was a ghost of a smile on her lips. She looked smug, like screwing me over was the highlight of her fucking day.
The hearing was quick. It was basically someone to moderate while Victoria’s lawyer made demands that a portion of our Will went to his child because as stated in our will the money would go to surviving children and spouse. Since she was his child, she fell into that portion of the Will. The more they discussed everything, the more I felt sick.
“Jane.” George laid a hand on shoulder. I jumped at the contact, feeling like I was slipping out of control. “Do you have anything you want us to ask or anything you think we might need?” he whispered.
“When did she tell him about their baby?” I had to know.
“My client would like to know when Ms. Guzman told Mr. Ramos about the child?” George asked.
I saw her lawyer look over at Victoria. “My client says she told him on April twenty-second in twenty seventeen.”
If I thought I was done with the surprises, then I was wrong. She told Henry on our fucking wedding day.
“Did she have the baby already, or was she still pregnant?” I asked, and George repeated my question.
“My clients say she was still pregnant.” Her lawyer replied.
I nodded my head, not wanting to hear anymore. They talked back and forth a few more times before George looked at me.
“She wants half of the money that was left to you. If you agree, then we can settle this now.” George asked me.
