“Her lawyer knows a Paternity test might be issued, so it is a possibility that she is his daughter. I think we can safely assume she is, unless her lawyer is an idiot and doesn’t know that the court would request one done at a lab that the court chooses.” George looked at me like I was a ticking time bomb.
“George, would you like for me to get the car ready?” His secretary came in and placed a coffee in front of me.
He checked his watch and nodded his head. “I think it’s best we get there early and go over a few other things. Did you bring the papers I asked you for?” I heard what he was saying, but it was like I was frozen in whatever emotion I was feeling at the moment.
“Jane,” George said, before he laid a hand on my shoulder. He leaned back against his desk with his arms crossed in front of him. “I’m so sorry we must go through this, and I’m so sorry I’m unloading all of it right before we go to court, but I need you to stay strong for me. I’m thinking they will just make their demands, and the court will issue a paternity test.”
I looked up, wishing he would just go by himself, and just leave me here to do whatever I needed to do to get my shit together. He said a few more things, and I couldn’t do it anymore. I tuned him out as I gave him the statements he required. He asked a few more questions, and I answered automatically. I know I was in denial. There was no way Henry would cheat on me.
We were so happy and obsessed with each other that we hardly spent any time apart. It wasn’t until we suffered a few miscarriages that things became rocky. I worked on autopilot as we gathered our things and headed to the courthouse. Since this was a preliminary hearing, we were in a smaller room with a judge. George and I waited outside of the room, and he talked me through what would happen. That’s when I heard heels clacking towards us. I willed myself not to look up at her. This woman was a pain in my ass even after Henry’s death.
“Robert,” George acknowledged what I would assume was the other lawyer.
“George, good to see you. How is your wife?”
I looked up from the folder we were looking at, and I immediately saw Victoria. A little girl was holding her hand, and all the blood left my face. She looked so much like Henry. She had his dark hair, caramel eyes, and his nose.
