I hadn’t applied a full face of makeup in months, and I figured it wouldn’t hurt to look a little more done-up. Grabbing my purse and keys, I took the elevator down to the garage, and got into my SUV. I arrived at George’s office at seven fifteen, nervous as hell. I knew there was no way my mother-in-law could get a dime, plus what else was I supposed to use to finish the house, and also pay for everything after they died?
George’s secretary greeted me and led me to his office, which looked out at downtown. “Good morning, Jane, so glad you could get here in time.” He was sitting, drinking a cup of coffee.
“I didn’t think it would’ve been so hard, but I’m so glad I could make it, too. So, who is it?” I asked, not wanting to wait another moment.
He looked visibly uncomfortable, and it made me worry tenfold.
“Does a Victoria Guzman sound familiar?”
Chills crept up my spine, and I was stunned. I nodded, lost for words, trying to think how the hell did this bitch think she was entitled to anything of Henry’s. We had been married for four years and prior to that; we had dated for two years. How the hell did she think he would leave her something? I knew we had always had problems with her, but was she that delusional that she thought she was entitled to his money six years after they had broken up?
“Well, Ms. Guzman is claiming that she and Henry had a child together and in his Will it states that your children and the surviving spouse are entitled to that money.” He was reading off some papers. My vision was spotting, I felt the blood rushing to my face, and I felt like I could pass out. Swallowing the lump in my throat, I coughed at the dryness from drinking the night before. I knew I was breathing heavier. I closed my eyes trying to calm down, but I was just falling off the edge of calm.
“How old is the kid?” I rasped.
“Um…” He looked through some papers. “She is five years old.”
Five fucking years old. There was no way.
“She’s lying.” I didn’t know what else to say. I felt like I was on a roller coaster and I couldn’t get my bearings.
“She has provided a DNA test,” he said, pulling it out of the file. “She also said he was aware of the child.”
“That’s convenient,” I snapped, anger bubbling to the surface.
