“Ten, Nathan goes with me. Take it or leave it.” I said, staring him down. I wanted to show him it didn’t matter to me. I needed to appear like he couldn’t get me to do his bidding just by snapping his fingers. Callum stood next to me, glaring at me, but I didn’t dare break my eye contact with Lucio.

“Jane, you are a stubborn woman,” Lucio said, walking towards me. “I can see why these men like you. I see you pushing them and making them work for it.”

I shrugged, like whatever he was saying didn’t mean shit, like it was any other day for me. He stared at me again like he was looking for a weakness, probing what he could use to make me bend to his will.

“Fine, ten thousand off of Callum’s debt, and Nathan can come with you,” he said, turning around motioning his hand so that I could follow him.

I didn’t have time for anything, but I pulled Callum in for a kiss. “Don’t be mad,” I whispered.

I grabbed Nathan’s hand and left before I could get in trouble. I followed Lucio and his goons out to the cage. The crowd was buzzing with excitement as we walked down one of the aisles. I saw the fighters in the middle talking to the ref as we got to the side. I assumed this was the guy going to help.

“Dev!” Lucio shouted, catching the attention of the fighter. “This is Jane, she will help with any medical attention you might need.” He left, not expecting an answer, leaving Nathan and me looking at Dev.

“Hello,” I called out to him, and he looked at me with absolutely no emotion in his eyes. He looked young, his body covered in tattoos and he had a buzzed head. His bright blue eyes looked too vibrant to be real. He nodded at me and turned around to wait for his opponent.

I didn’t know why, but I felt my heart break for this guy. I felt like there was an awful story attached to him and he reminded me a little of Callum.

The bell rang, and the fighters went at each other.

“He’s charming.” Nathan said, looking around. There was no finesse in this fight, in stark contrast to Callum’s. These guys were throwing punches like their life depended on it. I had to look away because the other guy landed a punch that snapped Dev’s head to right and I could have sworn I heard a crunch. The bell rang, and I ran in, leading him over to the chair Nathan had sat down. He looked disoriented.

“Dev, can you hear me?” I shone a light over his eyes.

“Yea.” He was slow, but he shook his head and that seemed to clear it.
