I watch as she walks off in the direction of the master quarters we used to share all those years ago. Slightly embarrassed that she’ll realize nothing has changed after all this time, I reluctantly let her go. I left it just as it was, keeping her with me anyway I could and, I realize now, always hoping one day she’d return.
“Sweet dreams,” I yell, she raises her fist, then her middle finger, and flips me off over her shoulder.
“Constantly living in denial,” I grunt, as I turn and storm back into the dining room, “you’re going to fucking need them.”
Chapter 15
Peter
“Of course, Peter should have kept quiet, but of course he did not. He immediately answered in Hook’s voice… ‘I am James Hook, captain of the Jolly Roger.’”
Peter & Wendy
- J.M. Barrie
SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO
With a force unknown to me, I slash my sword through one of the lost boys and watch him cry out in pain. That’ll teach the fucker to go behind my back and tell Tinker Bell where I’ve been hiding the last few weeks.
I returned home from Kingston Gardens barely a week ago now. All I wanted to do was hole up in Hangman’s Tree and be left alone. The lost boys had other plans though, and snitched about where I’ve been spending my time to the one person I didn’t want them telling. Since Wendy turned her back on me, on all of us, the last thing I needed was to come home to a bitter, angry fae.
The last of the boy’s life drains from his face, but it does nothing to ease my pain. He’s the third boy I’ve killed this week. Stashing my sword on my hip, I feel John’s presence at my side and stiffen. Why he insisted on coming back with me, I will never know. But I do know that he’s been gone every night since, disappearing and coming back late, after the sun has already started to rise in the early morning hours.
“Is there a purpose for all this madness?”
His question pisses me off. Makes me want to tell him to go back home. Return to the Darling household, stop pretending with us all here in Neverland. He was never the one I wanted here. He only came because it was a package deal. I only ever wanted Wendy. Not her rotten brothers who ended up ruining everything in the end.
But I don’t tell him to leave. Truth is, I don’t think I ever could. As long as he stays, as long as I give him a reason to never leave, maybe she’ll come back to me. Maybe, one day, I can bring her home to where she really belongs.
