My smile widens. “Death comes to all of us. And trust me, he got his.” I can still hear his screams for a savior as I cut him, limb by limb. An atonement that was long overdue, finally paid in full the night before I came for Wendy. Our eyes search each other, exposing something so beautiful, so pure, so raw, it hurts. “But Darling, not all of us truly get the chance to live.”
On instinct, we pull each other closer. My lips resting above hers as she breathes me in, taking my life with hers, both of us finally exhaling all doubt, as I inhale our love and hold it inside until it burns itself back to life.
“You can’t have life without air, Wendy,” I whisper. She attempts to pull me closer, our lips grazing each other softly as I roll on top of her. Framing her face with my hands, she wraps her thighs around me, and I groan. “Let me be your air, Darling. Let me show you love like I didn’t get the chance to before.”
“My life doesn’t matter if you’re not in it, Peter,” she cries as my lips fall to her cheek and I kiss a trail downward to her neck. “I tried living, tried merely existing, if only for our daughters.” My movements still when she mentions the girls I’ve never known. Not the way a father should. “But it was hopeless. Torment. A nightmare, living every day without you in my life. Without you by our side.”
My face lifts and catches her teary eyes. “You and me. The beginning and the end, remember?”
“And what if this is our end?” She stammers nervously. “Even though we were apart, I knew that the magic could still exist. If only in my mind, we were still together. I don’t want it to end. Oh God, what if this is our end, Peter?”
With a sad smile, my lips lower to hers and I whisper, “Then we’ll meet it together, Darling.”
Chapter 22
Wendy
“‘Certainly not. I have got you home again, and I mean to keep you.’”
Peter & Wendy
- J.M. Barrie
I haven’t tasted his kiss in seventeen years. In fact, I haven’t tasted any man’s lips but Peter’s. I still remember the way they felt against mine. I stayed up nights replaying all the times we spent together in my mind. I tortured myself with the memory of his lips, his kiss, the urgent and demanding way he stole my breath away all those years ago, night after night.
