This time, when his lips meet mine, the same sense of urgency we felt all those years ago is back. We’re both eager to follow because we know where it’s taking us and quickly start chasing a connection that we’ve both been craving, and denying ourselves, for far too long.

He lays me back against the sheets and my legs widen. I take him in, urging him to move faster as his thrusts pick up speed, deepening to a painful depth inside me, and my hands clutch him closer. We don’t say a word because there is no need. Everything we can ever say is expressed between us as we stare into each other’s eyes, and he claims me. Takes me. Maybe for the first real time in our lives. Our souls exposed. Hearts united. I start to cry from the beauty of everything that I’m feeling. That we’re finally experiencing. A magic most of the world never knows.

His jaw ticks. His brow is slick with sweat as it furrows, as he holds me closer and never looks away. Everything we could ever say, ever apologize for, is felt as he loves me in a way I’ve never known before, and I desperately, wholeheartedly, love him back.

My screams fill the room. He crows out louder than I have ever heard before.

We hold onto each other tightly and let go of the past, finally coming back to where we belong. Finally coming back to us. And finally, after all this time, feeling like we’re coming home.

Chapter 23

Wendy

“‘The last thing he ever said to me was, ‘just always be waiting for me, and one night, you’ll hear me crowing.’”

Peter & Wendy

- J.M. Barrie

His heartbeat stirs me awake. The rhythmic feeling of his fingers tracing gently up and down my bare arm makes me smile. With my head rested on his chest, my mind replays everything that’s happened since I’ve been back in Neverland. Everything that I thought I knew, now seems so different. The pixie dust has worn off completely and with it, a new day dawns. What it holds for us, I don’t exactly know yet. Even though that thought makes me nervous, I try to push it aside, focus on just the two of us. Here. Together. After all this time.

It’s nothing short of a miracle.

Nothing short of pure magic.
