She attempts to climb off my lap, and I reluctantly let her go. She steps a few feet away and waits for me, glancing at me once over her shoulder. I take a few deep breaths, when I can finally piece myself back together again, I rise and take a few steps to her back. Grabbing the hook off my belt, I slice through her ties in one clean motion. She gasps as they fall to the floor, then pulls her arms back out in front of her, sighing with relief. Turning, she rotates her palms and tries to bring life back into her aching limbs.
With my finger, I gently raise her chin and take a step forward when I have her full attention. “This time,” I whisper, “Neither am I, Darling.”
Chapter 11
Peter
“...And this, as we shall see, led to mischief, because Tinker Bell hated to be under an obligation to Wendy.”
Peter & Wendy
- J. M. Barrie
SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO
“It’s beautiful,” she whispers in awe.
But my eyes aren’t looking where hers are. My eyes are fixed on her stunning silhouette. Her beautiful profile. The way her hair blows around her shoulders in a spine-tingling way.
There is a dampness on her skin from the mist that excites me in so many ways I never knew it could since I held her last night in the shower. Finally, my eyes land on the breathtaking way the sides of her lips lift into a smile as she gazes out across Cannibal Cove and the Tiki Forest. Her smile, it fucking stops my heart.
“Wendy, nothing compares to you,” I suddenly confess. Before she can turn to look in my eyes, I can’t stop myself from continuing. “You’re the most thrilling thing I have ever laid my eyes on. I’m helplessly drawn to you. I have been since before I can even remember. The beginning of everything in my life started the night I first sat at your window. Played music for you while you slept.”
She turns, her face a mixture of shock, infatuation, such an intense devotion that I have to advert my gaze.
“Peter,” she whispers. “If I had one wish, I’d wish everything in my life could begin and end with you.”
PRESENT DAY
I watch her in the shadows as I lean against the trunk of the Kapok tree. Her spine stiffens as she looks out across the forest. It’s such a different sight from the last time we both stood here, overlooking what we admired and beheld as beautiful. Now, our eyes only see destruction, chaos, an impending disaster. Taking a long drag off my smoke, I hold it in until it burns, then exhale as I push my weight off the tree and take a few steps towards her.
