I feel a frown pull at my lips, my mind racing and my heart telling me not to listen. I know what he’s saying. I can feel what we both don’t want to understand. It’s covered up by an enchantment. A beautiful allure that keeps pulling us back before we ever get to the truth.
“There is beauty in danger, Wendy,” he smiles. “Suspense. Thrill. The rush of the escape.”
My mind still struggles, but I feel myself start to smile as I stare back lovingly into his eyes.
“I want to play a new kind of game with you, Wendy,” he grins, a mischievous smile pulling across his handsome face.
“Will you show me your world, Peter?” I ask without thinking. Blushing as I wait for him to respond. His smile grows as he scoots a little closer on the bed.
“Will you stay with me?” he asks nervously. “Wait for me.”
“I’ve been waiting my whole life,” I confess. “I’ll always be waiting for you, Peter. Will you always stay with me? Wait for me?”
“Always,” he smiles and my heart soars.
The boy’s eyes fall to my mouth. He slowly brushes his thumb across my bottom lip and my body tingles. A jolt courses through me, awakening parts of me I don’t yet understand.
“The magic was never really gone,” he whispers. “The magic was always just you and I.”
“Do you think we can capture it?” I whisper. “Can we rewrite our story?” I swallow hard, my hand clutching his tightly, needing to know the truth, needing to know if we have a chance. “The best parts? The worst parts? Everything. Do you think we have a chance, Peter? To relive our favorite parts all over again?”
“Of course,” he smiles as his lips fall to mine and I breathe him in. They stay there, suspended above my own, and we take a moment to just breathe each other in.
Soon, he smiles. His eyes light up with the magic that never fails to take my breath away. Never fails to make me believe. To make me think happy thoughts.
With his lips hovering above mine, he slowly sucks all the air from my lungs before exhaling and breathing us both back to life when he says, “My favorite part, Darling, is the best part. The part that begins and ends with us.”
Chapter 29
Tiger Lily
“Bringing up the rear, the place of greatest danger, comes Tiger Lily, proudly erect, a princess on her own right. She is the most beautiful of dusky Dianas and the belle of the Piccaninnies, coquettish, cold and amorous by turns; there is not a brave who would not have the wayward thing to wife, but she staves of the alter with a hatchet.”
