Turning, I cross the room quickly before I can decide otherwise. Like, before I make a foolish mistake and take what I want. What I can’t and won’t let myself have.
“Remember, you’ve agreed to help me find what I’m looking for,” I seethe. “For your precious daughters’ sake, it’s best we get on with it. Be ready by dawn.”
I slam the door behind me the second my feet cross the threshold. Turning the lock quickly, I stash the key in my pocket. Closing my eyes, I rest my head back against the door and hear her crying just on the other side. I release a heavy sigh and feel more cursed than I ever have since she’s been gone.
That ring.
I try to breathe deep but I feel the air catching in my chest. My heart, my head, they’re a fucked-up mess from the sight of it on her finger after all this time.
Bringing her here might very well be a fucking mistake. She’s too close. Too real. Too tempting.
Seeing her here after almost two decades is making me fucking feel. Making me believe. Making me want more when I haven’t wanted anything since she walked away. Since she abandoned us. Since she gave us up.
I won’t go back on my reasons for bringing her here. Not now. I won’t let her change me. And yet, I can’t stop my head from wondering and from going where I don’t want it to go.
Damn it.
My hands grip my hair in rage as my back slides down the door and I quickly slump to the floor. Digging my fingers in deeper, I self-inflict a torturous pain as a deathly reminder to stick to the fucking plan. Only problem is, Wendy was always my favorite thought. My biggest victory. The only thing in life I ever yearned for more than anything else.
Fuck!
Why is she still wearing that ring after all this time?
Chapter 3
Wendy
“When you are sleeping in your silly bed you might be flying about with me saying funny things to the stars.”
Peter & Wendy
- J.M. Barrie
TWENTY-TWO YEARS AGO
A soothing, rhythmic, humming noise nudges me from my dreams. I smile knowingly, feeling, and understanding, the shift in the room before I even open my eyes. The music is gentle, low enough for only me to hear and not wake anyone else up in the house. I sit for a moment, a blush creeps across my cheeks. My body awakens, in a different kind of way than it ever has before, for the boy who I sense sitting on the edge of my bed.
