We hurry through Never Wood, bypassing Mystic Mountain and coming to the thick, tropical forest before Cannibal Cove. Monkey’s scream and chatter above us as they swing through the thick trees. Large animals scuttle through the thick brush. Bats click as they swoop through the night near our heads, and I hear Wendy shriek in fright. I look up and see the moon is full, high, bright in the sky, as we quickly make our way towards the one place Tinker Bell doesn’t have memorized, like the rest of the island. Wendy’s hand tightens in mine as we come to a stop overlooking the cove.
It doesn’t seem like so long ago that we stood here, overlooking the same cove, and I told her of my plans to one day have a ship and be feared by a crew of men. The ship was my only solace the years we spent apart. The only place Tinker Bell never visited. Tiger Lily was allowed on deck from time to time. But she was escorted to and from my quarters. And never left unattended. Now, it looks like the Jolly Roger is our only chance at survival. I clutch her hand in mine and turn to look her in the eye.
She doesn’t say a word. Only nods her head, as if she knows it’s our only option. With a smile, I pull her swiftly behind me as I start to make my way down the hill, towards the seashore.
“I told you, Wendy, all good pirates have to have a ship,” I attempt to joke, as our feet hit sand. I drop her hand and we both take off running towards the water.
“You also told me that I’m what everyone is fighting over.” She glances over her shoulder just as a faint tinkling of bells can be heard once again in the distance. “You weren’t wrong about that, either.”
Our toes hit the water and we start to wade through it quickly, pushing through the tide desperately with the need to make it to the Jolly Roger as fast as we can. Our only solace, that it’s sitting only a small distance out at sea.
“Only this time, Darling,” I jump into the waves, Wendy following suit as we start to swim to the ship. “I’m not letting them take what’s mine. You’re a treasure I’ve waited for my whole life, and the only way I’m giving you up this time, is over my dead body.”
Chapter 26
Hook
“A strange smile was playing about his face, and Wendy saw it and shuddered. While that smile was on his face, no one dared address him; all they could do was to stand ready to obey.”
