Stepping forward, his eyes hold mine sternly as he says, “You give me the chance to prove to you that I am better than him, and I’ll fucking prove it. Every damn time. All I’ve ever wanted was you, Tinker Bell,” I hear Tiger Lily shift restlessly behind me on her feet at his confession, and it pains me because I know why she’s so edgy. But I let the poor bastard in front of me go on, hoping it fuels her vengeance as much as mine. “You give me a chance to rule at your side, and I’ll help you take down Hook. Do what you must, but don’t harm Wendy.”
Again, what the fool doesn’t know…
“Then it’s a deal,” I smile. He gives me a curt nod and my need to finish what we once started grows.
“Good,” I exclaim, turning Tiger Lily’s way and giving her a sympathetic smile, reassuring her with my gaze that the end game is still the same.
The poor fool in front of us is just a steppingstone to get there. With a heavy sigh, I start for the door with a grin.
“I do love playing tricks, and Wendy was always my entertainment.”
Chapter 7
Hook
“Would you send me to school, and then to office, soon I should be a man?” Peter inquired craftily.
“Very soon.”
“I don’t want to go to school and learn solemn things,” he told her passionately. “I don’t want to be a man. O Wendy’s mother, if I was to wake up and feel a beard!”
Peter & Wendy
- J. M. Barrie
In the early morning hours, after my inflicted self-torture down memory lane, I lazily scrape a razor across my face and watch my eyes darken the entire time in the mirror. Memories, horrors, nightmares I’ll never escape rush through my mind as I stare at my reflection. The blade presses into my skin harshly, drawing a slow trickle of blood from underneath the flesh. I smile as it slides down my cheek and drops into the basin of the sink. It turns the water crimson as I shake off the shaving cream and rinse the blade. My mind turns numb for only a second as I rid myself of any evidence that I too, eventually grew older than I ever thought I would.
No one knows. No one has seen this part of me since I came back to Neverland. And that is exactly the way I’m going to keep it. My secret. One I will undoubtedly take to the grave.
