His hand stills. His movements come to a complete stop. I suck in a breath wondering what he’s thinking, but before I can ask his hand starts moving again. I try to tell myself to not read too much into everything. In reality, I have to face the fact that, whatever happened between us last night, as perfect as it was, is guaranteed not to last. Not if he doesn’t give up Neverland. Because I can’t stay here. Something tells me he won’t follow. And if he does, he won’t stay. Not forever.
Still, I can’t help but hope that somehow, we will be able to write a different ending to our story this time.
“Even when I close my eyes, you’re still with me,” I hear him whisper, his voice heavy with sleep. Sexy. Raspy in a way that dances deliciously across my skin. “I’ve had the same dream for years. Only it doesn’t really feel like a dream.” Again, his fingertips start to run up and down my arm and goosebumps break out across my skin. A premonition. As if I know what he’s going to say before he even has a chance to say it. “There was a little girl, and we were running through Kingston Gardens. I was chasing her because she stole my heart the moment, I saw her.”
Visions flash before my eyes. It’s almost as if I can see what he’s talking about. Almost as if I was there, too. Almost as if he’s right, it’s not a dream, but something bigger, greater, that we’re both finally realizing.
“It was you, Wendy,” he confesses so quietly I almost don’t think I hear him right. “It’s always been you, Wendy.”
My mind is neither here, nor there, as I struggle with what he’s just said. But if that were true, we didn’t meet all those years ago, when he appeared one night at my window, and lulled me to sleep with music as he sat on the edge of my bed. If that’s true, we’ve been tricked. Manipulated. Deceived.
But by who?
Only one thought comes to mind, and my breathing stops as I ponder what it all means, why we haven’t seen the truth before now. We’ve never taken pixie dust as a drug before now. Only ever to fly when needed.
Truth serum. It all makes sense.
Staying in Neverland isn’t safe. But going home means losing Neverland, saying goodbye to Peter for good.
Or does it?
