Based on my research, the story of Alice Kerr-Sutherland and her book is a fable. The book was, in fact, written by the writer, Jacqueline Ophir, prior to her forming The Alice Kerr-Sutherland Society as a tribute to the non-existent author. Regardless of the author or the book’s origin, “A Guide to the Correction of Young Gentlemen” details the philosophy, equipment and techniques for the successful administration of physical discipline to males by females. The book and the AKS developed a following in England and in the United States. The AKS became so popular that they began to publish a quarterly publication, "The Governess". When it was published, "The Governess" had the reputation as being an elegant and refined journal of disciplinary literature. The magazine itself is no longer published but copies are still available.

Although the AKS has evolved into a society of Adult women who discipline Adult males, “The Governess” stayed true to the original philosophy of the book “A Guide to the Correction of Young Gentlemen”. The original twelve issues of “The Governess” consisted of dozens of letters, essays, articles, poems, reviews, and intriguing archive material about the disciplining of young men at the hands of Female Guardians.

A more recent publication that caters to a sophisticated form of Female Domination through the discipline of the husband is WHAP magazine (Women Who Administer Punishments). WHAP is a FemDom publication with a retro 1940’s look with stories and articles about real women who dominate their husbands through spankings and regular discipline sessions. Much like “The Governess”, WHAP has a design and a format that appeals more to the female. It is non-pornographic with tasteful illustrations that accompany the articles and stories.

Today, the vast majority of the AKS members are well-educated and upper mobile individuals who believe in and practice Female Domination through discipline between consenting adults. Most of the members of the AKS are not into leather or BDSM but rather enjoy an eloquent and sophisticated type of Female Domination based on the Victorian era.

The Victorian Era is the eclectic period of time between the mid and the late 19th century, covering the sixty-four year reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901. Though Queen Victoria's reign over England ended in 1901 when she passed away, the era which bore her name continued on for several more years, creating styles, fashions, and symbols of a gilded age, rich with elegance and romance.

At the AKS socials held at Trudy’s house, the women dress in Victorian era outfits and their husbands or male partners dress in tux pants and black bow ties (no shirts) or feminized maid outfits. The men prepare the food and refreshments and serve the women as the women socialize.
