- ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Evie racked her brains for something that didn’t involve the time travel mess she was in. While Ben was open-minded, that would be pushing things. So instead, she veered towards something more tangible. ‘It’s the guy I’m seeing. Hugo. I like him a lot, and I think he likes me too, but … with all this romance, what if he’s too good to be true and he ends up shattering my heart into a million pieces?’
Ben nodded quickly, like he totally understood. Evie had forgotten how good it felt to offload to Ben. She’d always been able to talk to him about the sorts of things she’d only ever shared with her best friends in Melbourne.
‘I mean, you’re into that sweep-you-off-your-feet romantic stuff, so isn’t that a good thing? And if you’ve fallen for him, he must be a good egg.’
Evie nodded, grateful for his reassurance.
‘So come on then,’ he went on. ‘Tell me more about him.’
Evie told him how Hugo was a former actor who’d decided to write a novel between jobs and found he liked writing more than acting. How she couldn’t stop sneezing around his cat, Bunny. How he cooked lovely meals for her and how she felt like she had known him for years, not weeks (but not that she actually had).
‘Why don’t you invite him over?’ Ben asked.
‘You mean now?’ Evie was surprised by his suggestion. She and Ben only ever hung out just the two of them.
‘Yeah. I wouldn’t mind checking that he’s the real deal! Plus, he could help us out with the cooking. It’s not like you’re bringing much to the table,’ said Ben with a grin.
‘You really think I should invite him? Isn’t this whole thing a bit over the top?’ Evie asked.
‘Yeah. It’s bloody bonkers. But so are you,’ Ben said, shrugging.
Evie stuck out her tongue and took out her phone. And without giving it a second thought, sent a text to Hugo.
‘So, as soon as my dad walks through the door, Ben, you tell him to get changed into his nicest suit. I’ve wrapped up Mum’s present and got a card, so he just has to sign it. I’ll wait downstairs for Mum and Meg, with Hugo,’ Evie instructed, pacing up and down the kitchen nervously.
