- ABOUT THE AUTHORS
‘Ever since you came into my life, everything has seemed brighter. I know that’s a bit wild of me to say. But it’s true.’ Hugo watched her carefully, looking a little bashful.
Evie slipped off her stool and without saying another word, she stood on her tiptoes, pulled him down and kissed him. He kissed her back, passionately, and it was the best kiss she had ever had. She felt that kiss from the pit of her stomach to the tips of her toes. Hugo made the throaty sound that she had heard him make so many times before in his intimate scenes on screen. He trailed his lips down to her neck, which she also knew was coming. She unbuttoned his shirt the way Hettie did in Henrietta’s Gift, two at a time, and he responded like he always did on screen: kissing her lower and lower, muttering sweet nothings about how beautiful she was. He tore off her dress and unclasped her bra and she slid off his pants and all of a sudden she was naked, on top of him, on the tiles of Hugo Hearst’s kitchen floor, which was covered in just the slightest layer of cat fur. She kissed him deeply again, praying she wouldn’t sneeze, and he responded with precisely the right amount of tongue. It was just like the movies. But better.
And then, BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
Evie sat up and Hugo looked at her quizzically. Saucy-smelling smoke filled the air.
‘Shit! The pasta!’ Hugo exclaimed, and Evie rolled off him, laughing.
TEN
Ten
On their third date, Evie and Hugo went to a secret bar in Covent Garden and, between them, tried eight out of the eleven signature cocktails on the menu. On their fourth date, they didn’t even make it through the opening credits of Love and Other Drugs before snogging. On their fifth date, they met at Deja Brew before Evie’s first lecture of the day and sat, side by side, focused on their respective laptops. They barely uttered a word after ordering their hot chocolates; they just wrote in a companionable silence.
On their sixth and most recent date, they made sushi together at Hugo’s. Evie had laced hers with way too much wasabi. They had eaten in bed, laughing and kissing and touching.
When Evie woke the next morning, curled up in Hugo’s soft, crisp sheets, she stretched out her legs luxuriously. Last night had been incredible. So romantic and tender, and then crazily urgent and sexy.
Rolling onto her side, she spotted a note on Hugo’s empty pillow.
Dear Evie,
You were sleeping so soundly, I didn’t want to wake you. But inspiration has struck and I’m writing by the window.
