Evie couldn’t believe that Ben had come all this way, in the early hours of the morning, to find her. ‘Okay. And why are you here?’ Evie asked, standing directly in front of him. God, he looked toasty. She wanted to wrap herself up in him.

‘It’s over, with Sami,’ he told her.

‘Ben, I’m so sorry. Are you okay? What was her reason?’

Ben laughed, and Evie let the chords of his voice echo and sway with the wind around her, pulling her towards him. ‘I broke up with her, Evie. I know it’s hard to believe, that I could ever break up with someone so out of my league, but it’s true.’

Evie was shocked. They’d seemed so good together. She shook her head, her teeth chattering.

‘But I saw you with her at your party. You looked so happy.’

‘You didn’t come to the party!’

‘Yeah, I was there. Well, momentarily. What happened with you two, Benny?’

‘It just stopped feeling right.’

‘Why?’ she asked, confused.

‘Because I love someone else.’

Evie’s heart somersaulted, and then somersaulted again. Had she heard him correctly? The melodic tunes of Van Morrison continued to play from Ben’s phone.

‘Evie, I’ve been in love with you since the day I saw you secretly watching Amelie on your laptop during our first lecture together.’ Ben lifted his phone a little higher in the air.

Florence knocked on the window behind her and her three drunk friends hooted and howled.

‘Well, this is embarrassing,’ Ben said, glancing at them before turning back to Evie. His shoulders rose as he took a deep breath and then a tentative step closer towards her. ‘Look, I’m no good at being romantic, but this is my attempt at it. I know it’s no flower shower in your bedroom or fancy designer handbag. Heck, it’s just my phone, playing a song which, in my opinion, is extremely overrated, but I remember you once said you liked. It wasn’t even planned. I was just going to come and see you, but when I saw you with your head on that disgustingly dirty table I just thought …’

‘Ben?’

‘Yeah?’

‘Shut up and kiss me,’ Evie said, throwing herself at him.

And then they kissed. It was messy and sloppy and wet and hungry and passionate and giddy and everything that would never be in a movie. And it was perfect.

FORTY-SIX

Forty-six

Evie and Ben toppled into Ben’s flat, their limbs wrapped around each other. As they squeezed down the narrow hallway, Evie pressed her body against Ben’s, and he pulled her in closer, kissing her with a keenness she had never felt before. Evie leaned into him, unable to get close enough. A warm feeling started brewing deep in her stomach. This felt right, so very right.

‘Evie?’ Josie appeared in the doorway, still in her cinema uniform and cradling two succulents.
