- ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Evie nodded, already knowing she wouldn’t. She could no longer bear the gaping silences between them. She wanted Ben to be content too; he deserved to be happy more than anybody else she knew. Evie needed to give him the space to find that happiness; to nurture his relationship with Sami; to pursue his dreams. Once upon a time she had felt entirely untethered without him, but for the first time, she was prepared to be her own tether.
I’m okay, Evie thought, repeating Ben’s words in her head. Nothing can stop me.
FORTY-FOUR
Forty-four
Evie felt invincible. She’d just finished marking up another screenplay Florence had given her to review, after—according to Florence—she’d offered such helpful suggestions on the previous one. She’d now spent two full weeks in Florence’s office and felt a whole new sense of purpose. She craved new tasks, no matter how menial, and listened intently to Florence’s advice. Her notebook was already full of new ideas, queries, contacts and wisdom bombs—which Florence dropped as casually as saying ‘bless you’ after a sneeze. Even after a full day of work, Evie stayed up late into the night doing uni assignments, reading over her notes, and applying what she’d learned to her screenplay.
Today Evie was wearing her best silk shirt tucked into a pleather skirt, in preparation for Friday work drinks later that night. To her surprise, she had quickly moved beyond being the nerdy fangirl intern, and had fallen into pace with Florence, working alongside her idol like she was an actual grown-up. But still, she’d been shocked, and utterly thrilled, when Florence invited her out for a night on the town with some of her ‘film friends’. For the first time in a long time, Evie was feeling good about herself. So much so that she’d even stopped looking for Maximilian and had instead decided to live in the moment. To believe in herself, for once.
Evie scanned the screenplay in front of her, a historical fiction about Mary, Queen of Scots. She crossed out a few lines and made a comment in track changes on the Word document. She had a bit of a knack for this. She knew how films were meant to go. Peaks and troughs, cliff-hangers, drama and, more often than not, a happy ending. The ideas seemed to flow out of her fingertips and onto the page.
Her phone buzzed, interrupting her stream of thoughts. Evie turned it over, her stomach dropping just a little.
