- ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Evie was glad she’d called him, even if he did see her at her jealous, snotty worst. ‘I’m fine. I just feel a little trapped, you know? Like I’m stuck in this time, and there’s nothing I can do about it.’
Ben looked at her quizzically. ‘Well, I guess, we’re all stuck in this time, Berry. Whether we like it or not. It’s what we make of it that matters.’
Evie swung her legs around to face him. If only he knew how stuck she truly was. ‘That’s just the thing though, Benny. I’ve been given this great big opportunity. But am I doing enough?’ She reached her hand into the popcorn bag at the same time as Ben, their fingers grazing against one another.
‘You’re doing a hell of a lot, Evie. You’ve got the podcast, university, the screenplay, and you’re dating one of the most famous authors of all time for god’s sake. Plus you’re helping write his screenplay, which is actually going to be made into a movie that’s set to be a blockbuster hit!’
Evie blushed. ‘Thanks, Benny.’
‘I’m not finished. You’re not just the sum of what you do, you’re you. Evie Berry. Stubborn, addicted to Mrs Moffle’s Chocolate Popcorn, extremely crazy, but also one of the kindest, most ingenious, wonderful people I know. You make an incredible impact on those around you and that doesn’t count for nothing.’
Evie looked up at Ben, who was gazing at her so earnestly. His big, chocolate-brown eyes wide and kind. He licked his lip, clearing a bit of chocolate from the edge of his mouth. She had never noticed how nice his lips were. She tilted her head. And he tilted his. And she leaned in, just a fraction, her breath catching.
‘Evie.’
‘Ben.’
‘Did I tell you I’m still seeing someone?’
Evie froze, then quickly pulled away.
‘Yep, we’re still dating, believe it or not. In fact, we’re going out again tonight. Her name’s Sami. She seems really great. I think you’d like her.’
‘Oh, wow, Ben. The same girl you went on a first date with a while back? I didn’t realise you were still seeing her.’ Evie coughed loudly, straightening herself on the bed. She was shocked. By what had almost just happened, and by Ben’s announcement. In the decade or so she’d known him, Ben had never been serious about anyone.
‘Yeah. I really like her, Berry,’ Ben said, grinning shyly.
‘I’m so happy for you,’ Evie replied, surprised to find a lump forming in her throat.
