- ABOUT THE AUTHORS
He did that thing again where he nibbled her lip, and she let out a soft moan, her hips bucking towards him involuntarily. Evie reached her hand down to touch him and felt him tremble all over. Ben then moved his own hand down between Evie’s legs and started rubbing her softly.
‘Jesus, Ben.’
‘This okay?’
‘So okay. That feels … so good.’
He moved his hand up and down and she felt her breath quicken. Too fast. She needed to slow down before she unravelled too soon.
‘Do you have a condom?’ she asked.
‘Yeah, one second,’ Ben said, standing up and walking towards his drawers while Evie admired him from the bed. He ripped open the condom, slipped it on and then returned to the bed, kissing her again, but this time softer, more gently. She mirrored his pace, kissing him delicately, trying to control herself.
‘You sure?’ he said, as he lay down on top of her, kissing her neck, her shoulders, her chest.
‘Ben, yes!’ she replied wholeheartedly.
And then all at once he was inside her, moving back and forth slowly. With each movement, Evie’s hips jolted, her breath catching.
Ben kissed her, pushing in deeper, faster, harder. Evie felt giddy; her mind filled with images of Ben on top of her, Ben’s tanned chest, Ben standing in the cold playing her a love song, Ben all over her, Ben, Ben, Ben. But then, a different sort of carnal feeling flooded her being. A strong, animalistic intensity that Evie hadn’t felt before. For the first time, Evie felt primally passionate about being in her own skin. She felt an intimate courage course through her veins, then a thirst for life wet her tongue and a deep, ravishing love for her own self took over her entire body. Evie felt ripples inside her, a pressure forming down below, and she knew what was coming.
‘I’m about to—’
‘Me too—’
And Ben kissed her neck and Evie squeezed her eyes shut and against her will, out of nowhere, shouted ‘Somebody to Love!’ at the top of her lungs.
And then everything went black.

As Hugo put it, writing a book is less romantic than they make out in the movies. Which is why we are so very grateful for the many people who supported us along the way.
Thank you so much to all the wonderfully encouraging and creative people at Allen & Unwin, with special thanks to our brilliant publisher Kelly Fagan for your wisdom, guidance and positivity. A big thank you to our editors Tessa Feggans, Louise Thurtell and Lauren Finger. Your insights have been invaluable in bringing Evie’s story to life.
