‘Thank you everybody for coming tonight. There’s no pressure to read the sodding thing, but please, for the love of god, buy a copy and keep Liam fed!’

His audience laughed again, then clapped and cheered. As Hugo stepped through the crowd to find Evie, her heart swelled to the point of bursting. Tonight would go down in history as one of the best moments of her life.

PART TWO

NINETEEN

Nineteen

Evie opened the box on the coffee table to reveal a new iPhone in a black Prada case. She’d told Hugo time and time again not to spend crazy money on gifts for her. And she’d meant it. Evie didn’t need expensive presents to know Hugo loved her. But Hugo didn’t seem to understand this mentality. ‘I want to spoil you because now I can,’ he would say.

Evie read the note attached to the phone. A little something to ensure that we are never far away from one another, even when oceans divide us. Hugo xxx. She traced her fingers across his loopy handwriting, folded the letter in half, then placed it back on the bedside table. These notes had become their little ritual. Thoughts and declarations of his love filling the void of his absence.

Over the past few months, Hugo had been on the road almost as much as he’d been home. After his tour around the UK, which he’d left for just days after his book launch, he’d travelled to Sydney and Auckland, then come back to London just in time for Christmas and the New Year. Now he was back home briefly after finishing his four-city US book tour, but soon he would head to Italy, then back to LA, where he’d do more events and press before spending time with Louise Chang, the US producer of the Henrietta’s Gift film, who they’d finally secured. It felt to Evie like Hugo’s fans adored him almost as much as she did, and with each new book signing, press conference or TV interview came another hefty royalty cheque. Evie was thrilled for him, of course. All that he had ever dreamed of was materialising before his eyes, and she knew there was so much more to come.
