- ABOUT THE AUTHORS
But she couldn’t help but wonder whether she’d made the right decision to stay behind in London, rather than diving into the thick of things with Hugo. Maybe then she could have escaped all this Chloe drama. It surely would have alleviated the gnawing ache of longing that seemed to fill her days.
As the rush dissipated, Steven walked in the door for the start of his shift. He began chatting excitedly to Evie about a top-secret celebrity who had just paid him to hack into a computer to retrieve some very old nude photos.
‘She found me through a friend of a friend who had told her I had quite the knack for le hack. Of course, I didn’t look at the photos, but I managed to get them back for her without any leaks. The money was great and golly, she was grateful.’ Steven looked chuffed with himself.
‘That’s great, Steven.’
‘I can’t tell you who it is.’
‘I would never ask.’
‘Alright, fine. It was a dame.’
‘A dame!’
‘Yes. But I won’t say anything more.’
‘Okay.’
‘And she’s starred in several recent films.’
‘Oh!’
‘And don’t tell anyone but—’
‘Can the two of you please stop talking about nude photos and computer hacking and every bloody thing else under the sun, and get back to work? I’m carrying the three of us!’ Josie snapped. Evie and Steven instantly stopped talking and sulkily began scooping popcorn.
THIRTY-THREE
Thirty-three
Tonight was going to be different, Evie told herself as she slicked black mascara across her lashes, steadying her hand in an attempt to avoid the dreaded ‘blob’. It was Christmas Eve and, as always, she was having dinner at her family home. Ever since the Ragdoll cat incident at her uncle’s house in Dorset when she was a teenager, Evie’s family had celebrated Christmas on the twenty-fourth, with her parents travelling west to see her dad’s family the next day while Evie and Meg lazed around the house eating leftovers and napping. In a couple of years, in her old life, Ben would start to join them too—and in return, Ben’s family would have Evie over for Rosh Hashanah, where she’d always eat too much honey cake and get sloshed on kosher wine. Evie had considered bringing the tradition forward, but things were still weird between her and Ben.
This year, the Berrys had also invited Hugo and his family to join them. It had been Hugo’s idea, really. He wanted to celebrate the screenplay finally being finished and mark the beginning of film rehearsals. Plus, it would save Evie and Hugo having to see the Hearsts in Surrey the next day. Two birds, one stone—that’s the Christmas spirit, thought Evie grimly.
