He flexed his fingers thinking about how to run a search to get what it was he was looking for. He needed someone whod been misdiagnosed and who had some connection with Michelle, Lexa, and Brianna. The misdiagnosis had to be bad enough for someone to think it was worth murdering three people.
He decided to start with M&M conferences. Anytime there was an adverse outcome for a patient that could have been avoided, the hospital ran a Mortality and Morbidity commonly referred to as an M&M conference. A task force made up of doctors from different disciplines would review cases to find if mistakes were made, why they were made, and if there were any way to avoid the same set of mistakes in the future; then they would present their findings. They werent a matter of finger pointing or trying to assign blame. Their purpose was to elevate the level of care the hospital gave to patients.
Morgan pulled up the agendas for the last three M&Ms and scanned through them quickly. Nothing jumped out at him. Yes. There were mistakes. Yes. Some of them even contributed to the premature death of a patient. Most, however, only accelerated the inevitable. He didnt think any of them were what he was looking for.
He shoved back from his desk and paced his office. Where should he look next? He stopped to gaze out the window. From his vantage point, he could hear the sound of an ambulance arriving at the Emergency Department even if he couldnt see it. He sighed. It meant somebody was having what might well be the worst day of their lives even if it was just another day for the staff.
Realization dawned and Morgan shook his head. He was thinking like a doctor. Hed taken that big step backward that allowed him the objectivity he needed when treating a patient. That was all fine and well while he was working, but that wasnt what was needed now. He needed to think like the killer now. When its the person you love, what seems like an acceptable error to someone else, might not seem that way to you at all.
He went back through the M&M cases again. Still, nothing rose to the level that would lead someone to take revenge in his opinion. Some family members probably didnt even know that a mistake had been made. Hospitals generally didnt advertise that information.
Oh, hey, Dr. M!
Morgan looked up, surprised to see Riley, the person from the cleaning service who always took care of these offices.
Sorry, she said. Didnt mean to startle you. I didnt expect anyone to be here right now. Okay if I empty the garbage?
Morgan darkened the computer screen and then pushed back from his desk. No problem.
