When she found out if she found out it would probably be the end of any hope of reconciliation. Not that there was much of that left anyway. Maybe it wouldnt, though. If she understood what he was trying to achieve. She might not approve of his methods, but shed see why he had to do what he was about to do.
Whatever the misdiagnosis was, it was going to have to be a doozy of a mistake, one so bad that it pushed a person over the edge, pushed them to the point where they would take several other peoples lives as revenge. The garage echoed with the sound of a car taking a corner too quickly. The smell of exhaust made his temple twinge.
Morgan flashed his badge at the security guard as he walked into the hospital.
Late to be coming into work, doc, the man said.
No rest for the wicked, Morgan replied, trying to sound nonchalant. The last thing he wanted was for anyone to note and remember that hed been here.
Aint that the truth. The man turned back to his phone and Morgan breathed a sigh of relief as he made his way through the halls.
The hospital was always busy. People dont get sick on a timetable, but the administrative offices were generally quiet at night. Separated as they were from the actual wards, lights were dimmed at night in the hallways. Shadows gathered in doorways and his footsteps echoed. Twice he was certain someone was behind him, but no one was there when he whirled around.
Paranoia. It was probably his own sense of guilt making him feel pursued. He knew what he was about to do was wrong. Violating peoples privacy had a host of unintended consequences. This time, surely, it would be worth it, though. People would understand once the actual perpetrator was brought to justice. They wouldnt be able to argue with his methods then.
He unlocked the outer door to the exam rooms and offices he shared with three other doctors. He went through the darkened waiting room where patients checked in. The HVAC turned on with a click, ruffling pages of magazines scattered around on tables. Then he went into the small suite of offices and exam rooms. Unlocking the door to his own office, he let himself in, heaving a sigh of relief when he shut the door behind him.
He booted up the computer and entered in his credentials, relieved when the recordkeeping system came up. Hed been a little worried that Ashley would put a flag on him and make it difficult to access the records. He had a feeling that the only reason she hadnt was because of the loyalty she still felt toward him.
It was something.
