I was just blowing off steam. I was in pain and nobody would help. You dont know what its like to have a back that hurts like that. Fugates voice was developing a whine.

Yet you seem to be able to do your job at the construction site pretty well and you certainly can run. Danielle leaned in. And why was that, Mr. Fugate? Why did you run?

Fugate dropped his head into his hands. I dont believe this. I cant freaking win.

What cant you win, Mr. Fugate? Danielles voice had gotten even quieter and softer.

Im damned if I do and damned if I dont.

To Morgans disgust, the mans eyes filled with tears. The man was throwing himself a pity party while Lexa lay dead in the morgue. Morgan shoved back from the table and crossed his arms over his chest, but he kept his mouth shut.

How are you damned? Danielle asked.

Morgan didnt know how she did it, how she kept her cool like that.

I . . . I thought you were there because . . . He brushed a tear off his cheek with the back of his forearm.

Because why, Don?

It didnt escape Morgan that shed switched to the mans first name.

I did some blow the other night, the night I was out with the guys watching the game. I ran into some dude in the bathroom and he offered me a line and I did it. I thought you were there to drug test me and I panicked. His face fully crumpled now. I dont want to go back inside.

Ridiculous. The man was clearly lying.

You do realize that running from the FBI is a really good way to make sure youll get drug tested, right? Danielle pointed out.

I said I panicked! I wasnt thinking! I just wanted to get away.

Danielles phone beeped and she squinted at it for a moment and then sighed. Okay, Mr. Fugate. Your alibi checks out. The bartender at Petes remembers you being there that night. Not for any flattering reasons, though. Youre not a very nice customer, apparently. Youre not welcome back there.

So what does that mean? Fugate asked.

Danielle reached across the table and unlocked the handcuffs. It means youre free to go.

Wait! What? Morgan swiveled in his chair to stare at her. Hes an addict. Addicts lie all the time. Hes making all this up. Hes got specific connections to two of the victims. Probably to the first one, too. I just havent found it yet.

Hes also got an alibi, Morgan. Hes not our guy. Danielle held up a hand to stop him.
