One of the agents that had met them in the garage now stood outside the door of the room where Dolan was being held. Hes been pretty quiet.

Thanks for keeping an eye on him, Mick. Danielle unlocked the door and walked in.

Morgan followed, giving the agent a nod.

It looked like Dolan had fallen asleep. Hed pillowed his arms as best he could with the handcuffs still on and rested his head on them. Morgan had read something somewhere that its usually the guilty that become very calm when theyre arrested. Its a relief to them, in some ways, to be caught. People who are innocent tend to be the ones up, pacing around, demanding lawyers. If that was the case here, Dolan was as guilty as sin.

Dolan looked up as the door shut behind them with a click. Could I have a glass of water or something? His eyes were red-rimmed and there was a slight tremble in his hands. Guilt or DTs? Morgan wasnt sure.

Sure, Danielle said, settling herself in the chair across from Dolan and nodding for Morgan to take a seat next to her. A few seconds later, there was a discreet knock at the door and the agent who had been standing outside before came in with a paper cup of water that he set in front of Dolan, then left without saying word.

If there was any doubt that they were being watched and listened to, that was gone. Morgan wasnt sure if that was a ploy or not.

Danielle set a pad of paper in front of herself and a pen. So, Dr. Dolan, can you tell us where youve been for the past three days?

Every minute of them?

If possible.

Dolan took a sip of the water. A little of it sloshed onto the table. Its possible. Not terribly interesting, but possible.

Im listening, Danielle said, pen poised to start writing.

For the last three days, Ive been inside my house. Drinking.

She looked up, eyes narrowed. Is that supposed to be funny? The tremble in his hands had gotten worse. He was shaking the water out of the cup.

No, he said, looking down at them. Not funny.

Danielle glanced in Morgans direction. He shrugged. She looked back at Dolan. I dont think were following.

Dolan sneered. Too bad. Thats all Ive got. I dont remember much of it myself.

He was way too nonchalant. He was hiding something.

Danielle opened the folders and pulled a photo out of each one and then set them up so that Dolan could see them. They were all crime scene photos. Michelle, Brianna, and Lexa. Morgan had to look away. Hed seen plenty of dead bodies in his day. None had touched him like these three.

And? Dolan asked. What do these have to do with me?
