Danielle shook her head. Nope, Dr. Stark. Its time to call it a day. Well pick it up again tomorrow when were fresher. Besides, we wont have anything from the crime scene unit until then.

We should look at what weve got so far, Morgan argued.

Danielle made another turn and pulled up in front of Morgans apartment building. Tomorrow. Do you want me to pick you up?

Morgan knew when he was beat. Sure.

He got out of the car and watched it until it turned the corner out of sight.

He looked up at his building and a heaviness returned to his heart. Hed spent the day with his brain and his body fully engaged in something. Now what? The recliner chair and a delivery pizza?

It hardly seemed worth it.

He collected his mail junk mail and bills and trudged up the stairs. He took a quick shower to wash off the last of the mud that still clung to him from tackling Cole Hutton in the park and took up his position in the recliner chair, glass of Scotch in hand.

He flicked on the news.

It was surreal. The reporter a pretty Asian-American woman with dark hair blowing around her face was standing exactly where Morgan had been standing not more than an hour ago. The winding road disappeared behind her, but you could still see the crime scene unit finishing up on the side of the road, harsh temporary lights glaring down on them.

The body of a young woman was discovered in this remote area late this afternoon. Police have yet to release any information on the victims name, pending notification of the family. WLVX-TV has been hearing that the victim is another health care worker. No word on whether this crime is linked to the murders of Lexa Windham and Michelle Schultz.

The screen switched to a generic background with photos of Lexa and Michelle, side by side, on top of it.

Morgan slumped back into his chair. Lexa. Maybe that was why hed been keen to keep going. Here, back in his apartment, alone with his thoughts, the reasons why he was involved in this investigation came crashing back in.

Danielle might want him there for his eye for detail and his unique way of putting information together. He wanted to be there because he wanted to get the son-of-a-bitch who had cut short such a promising young life. He drained the Scotch in one swallow.
