Danielle turned and walked over to an older white man wearing a Washington Nationals sweatshirt who was rolling trash bins to the curb. We are. Have you seen him?

Sure did. Left about thirty minutes ago. The man set the garbage bin upright and scratched at the back of his neck. In a bit of a hurry, too. Didnt want to stop to chat or anything.

Does he usually chat? Danielle asked.

The man grimaced. Used to. Not since his mama died, though. Hes having a hard time with that. Do you want to leave a card or something? I could let him know you were here and want to talk to him.

Danielle shook her head. No thanks. Did he happen to say where he was going?

The man shook his head. No. Just waved me off. Said he had something urgent and would talk to me later.

Danielle and Morgan returned to the car. She stayed calm and cool until they got inside. Then she pounded her fist on the steering wheel. Damn it. He could be out right now, tracking his next victim. She turned to Morgan. Based on what youve seen so far, who do you think the next victim will be?

It wasnt like Morgan hadnt been thinking about it. Im not sure. I dont think I quite understand the order hes going in unless its just who he thinks he can get to when.

Danielle took a couple of deep breaths and then asked, That could be. Whos left?

Theres the clerk who made the actual billing error, but her name isnt in the file. Two techs from the imaging department. He hasnt hit the doctor who probably should have caught the error before he made that call. Morgan ticked each person on one of his fingers.

Twisting in her seat to look at Morgan, Danielle said, If hes watching the news at all, hes got to realize were getting closer to figuring out what the connection is between his victims. He might switch how he prioritizes because of that. Who do you think his primary target would be?

The doctor, Morgan said with no hesitation. It was the way it worked. The doctor took the most responsibility always. They were where the buck stopped and there was no doubt in Morgans mind that this doctor had screwed it up.

I agree. Do you know who the doctor is? Danielle started the cars engine.

Dr. Clark.

You know him?

Morgan stuck out his hand in a half-gesture. Weve met.

Can you call him?

Doctors pretty much never have listed phone numbers. Their lives would be hell if they did. Itll take a minute to get the number.

Better get started now then. Danielle pulled away from the curb.

Morgan called the hospital. This is Dr. Morgan Stark. I need to get an urgent message to Dr. George Clark in Internal Medicine.

Just a moment, Dr. Stark. Ill try his service.
