  89. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“So? You can’t tell me she doesn’t know what she’s doing when she wears those skirts. Her ass is so round. I want to bend her over this table and let all of you watch. God, she’d probably be a dream, spread out for us. A fucking buffet, and the perfect little slut. It’s always the quiet ones. I bet she likes to take it like a whore. A little birdie told me she’s up for partner. There’s no way that’ll happen. Unless she fucks Wallace first. Maybe she already has.”

A cord inside me snaps. I’m blind with anger. Brimming with rage. Before I can think twice, my palm is slamming against the table and I’m on my feet. We passed my breaking point eight sentences ago. Those comments crossed a line and I’m awake now, revving for a fight. Eager to hurt. Ready to inflict unfixable pain.

“You need to shut up,” I snarl, glaring at the perpetrator.

“What was that?” Brad asks. He’s grinning, eyes full of mirth, no trace of remorse to be found. He doesn’t care what he said to his fellow colleagues in a public domain, the brazenness and crassness loud enough for anyone in the building to hear. He’s flaunting it and shoving it down our throats.

I’m two seconds away from lunging at this piece of trash and letting my fists run wild, giving him a piece of my mind and showing everyone exactly what I think about his remarks.

Fucking bastard.

“I said, you need to shut the fuck up,” I repeat, louder this time. I’m done being soft-spoken, no longer the nice guy. I’m a wolf now, snarling in the face of a man I want to destroy for tearing her down. “How dare you sit there and talk about a colleague that way? Would you speak about one of us like that? Is it because she’s a woman? Emma has been here for years—eons longer than you—and does an exceptional job. She’s changed the community, and helps people day in and day out, which is more than I can say for you.” Every pair of eyes is on me, and I power on, unfazed by the attention. “If I ever hear you disrespecting her or any other woman like that again, I’ll make sure they revoke your bar license and you’ll never practice again. Mark my fucking words.”

“Are you going to call in a favor to daddy?” Brad jokes, knowingly hitting a nerve.

I hate when people imply I’ve earned my success because of my father. I love the man to pieces, but all of my accomplishments in life have been on my own, not from his hand.
