- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
“Don’t want it? Yes you do! It’s the chance of a lifetime. You can’t pass up an opportunity like this!”
“I’ve been thinking about leaving for a while now. Hearing about the pay discrepancies solidified my desire to get out. I love seeing you every day, but I cannot, in good conscience, continue to work for a firm where shit like that happens. Besides, I don’t want to sneak around and hide our relationship, which we’d have to do if—when—you get the job. Withdrawing my name will push me to actually get off my ass and make shit happen.”
“Where are you going to go?” I ask frantically.
“Shhh.” His lips brush over my temple. “I’m not going anywhere without you. I’ve wanted to start my own firm for a while now. So why not? Even if I didn’t want to leave, I would have conceded to you. I’m emailing Wallace tonight. From what he told me, he was going to offer it to you anyway. Don’t think for a goddamn second you’re sloppy seconds. You’re the grand prize, baby.”
I bury my face in his sweater, feeling a mixture of pride and relief. “Thank you.”
“This was all you, Em. I’m so fucking proud of you.”
FORTY-FIVE
HENRY
“Do you have anything else on your agenda the rest of the evening, or can I kidnap you?” I ask, holding Emma tight to my body. I’m never letting her go again. Seriously. I may have to follow her everywhere like some sort of stalker because I’m terrified to release her even an inch, afraid she might float away if I do.
“Well, I was going to watch The Devil Wears Prada and eat a pint of ice cream. Think you have something better in mind?” she challenges, arching an eyebrow.
“While I do adore Anne Hathaway’s character development in the movie, I had another idea. Come with me back to my place?”
I’m nervous at the suggestion. The bridge I created might be fixed temporarily, caution tape up while repairs are being made, but I know Emma. It’s going to take more than passionate words and a few kisses to win her trust back, no matter what she says. I’m aware that she loves me—cares about me, deeply—but I still hurt her. And hurt takes time to mend. It takes patience and care. All things I intend to give her—and more.
“Okay. We’re going to need to grab some dinner first. Spending the evening with your strangely fun friends made me work up an appetite.”
“The box of Zebra Cakes wasn’t enough?”
“Not nearly. I’m thinking tacos.”
“You took the idea right out of my head. Food, then my apartment. Sound good to you?”
“Sounds perfect,” she agrees softly.
