- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
“You deserve a speech. Emma Burns, you are, without a doubt, the greatest joy in my life. I can’t sleep without you next to me. I can’t get through my day without wondering how you are. I miss you when you’re gone, even if it’s for only a second. I can’t survive without your constant encouragement and faith. You keep my heart beating. You keep my lungs breathing. You keep my ass working toward a better future for us, and you’re the most incredible woman I’ve ever met. Every day I get to spend with you is my favorite day. I could go on and on, but I’m going to end with this: I love you, Emma. I loved you then, years ago, before I knew the depths of my adoration. I loved you in between, falling harder and harder through text messages and unknowing interactions in our office. I love you now, more than words can express, my favorite partner in crime. And I’m going to love you until I depart this earth and haunt you forever. I’m going first, honey, because I can’t survive without you. Will you make me the luckiest man in the world and let me be your husband?”
“Yes,” she chokes out. I take her hand in mine and slip the ring onto her finger. I knew it would fit. I did a lot of diligent research, wanting to get this exactly right. “It’s beautiful.”
“I debated putting a tiny Zebra Cake in the center,” I murmur.
“Hopefully we can still make some changes,” she jokes through watery sniffs, kissing my palm. “I love you. Then. Now. Forever.”
“Maybe I can become Henry Dawson-Burns. Henry Burns-Dawson. Shit, now that I’ve said it out loud, I like it. I need to make that happen. Let’s go to the courthouse tomorrow.”
“I like the sound of both of those. And I’d gladly marry you tomorrow. Hell, let’s go right now.”
“RB. VRG. Zebra Cakes. My sweet, sweet, Emma. Honey. Sunflower. You are my light in the darkness and the warm, sunny good thing on the gloomy, cloudy, chilly days. My forever and always, ultimate dream girl. You never gave up on me, even when I didn’t deserve you. Even when I messed up. You came back for me.”
“I’m never giving up on you, Henry. You’re the best companion project I’ve ever had.”
“The last one too, I hope,” I add.
She shrugs, looking down at her new diamond. “I don’t know. Someone asked me to go to a banquet with them tonight. I think I might be busy now.”
I growl, scooping her into my arms and walking to the desk.
“You’re damn right you are.”
“I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you, Henry Burns-Dawson.”
“Together forever, honey. You and me.”
