- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
JD: You might be my favorite person who has ever existed.
JD: Four days, Sunflower. Four days.
TWELVE
EMMA
JD: What do you like to do in your spare time? What’s your ideal night look like? Spill.
RB: Staying in. A night on the couch reading is my idea of heaven. A blanket. A cup of tea. My warm socks.
JD: That sounds nice. A lot of my time is spent going out.
JD: Sure, some of it is for work, networking and all that.
JD: The older I get, the more your kind of night sounds ideal. Even if it means I’ll have to move into a senior citizens home.
RB: There’s plenty of room! We eat dinner at 4 p.m. and we’re asleep by 8. Do you like shuffleboard?
JD: I’m laughing out loud right now.
JD: You know how people say ‘lol’ when they have a blank expression on their face?
JD: Laughter is audibly coming out of my mouth. I’m getting the weirdest look from my friend. He’s asking if I’m drunk.
RB: Is getting drunk at 1 p.m. something you do often?
RB: Because now I have a lot of questions.
JD: Nah. Sometimes my job makes me want to drink excessively, but I reserve it for after hours.
RB: Yeah? I’m intrigued. Tell me more. What else do you like to do after hours, JD?
The message changes from delivered to read instantly, like he’s waiting for me to ask a question along these rapidly blurring lines.
“Shoot,” I hiss, throwing the cursed phone across my office. It hits the floor and skids away, sliding under my bookshelf.
The messages JD and I have exchanged so far have been strictly platonic. Funny, interesting, and peppered with hints of deep discussions and thoughtful conversation. What we haven’t talked about is nighttime activities, what he sleeps in or his favorite sex position. I might as well have just invited him to bang on my desk.
I sneak a glance at the wood, my stomach twisting at the thought, a deep, dark feeling of pleasure greeting me. Would JD be strong enough to balance me on the edge, back flush against the surface while my legs wrapped around his waist? Or would he crawl on top of me, knees bracketing my hips as he caressed my face and whispered those sweet nothings he suggested early on in my ear while I trembled beneath him?
A couple of weeks ago I would have shut this arrangement down the minute any visualization of sexual activity crossed my mind or weaseled its way into our talks. Now I’m itching to know what response waits for me. Will he back down? Use this as an opportunity to meet me, toe to toe?
And which road do I want him to take?
